SHIPPING EXEMPTED FROM GLOBAL MINIMUM TAX
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) announced yesterday that 130 countries have joined the two-pillar plan to reform international taxation rules. The statement outlines plans for new rules on where companies are taxed at a tax rate of at least 15%. The new minimum tax rate would apply to companies with turnover above a 750-million-euro ($889 million) threshold, with only the shipping industry exempted.

REFUEL EU AVIATION: A GAME-CHANGING EU SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL PLAN?
At the second webinar organised by the European Logistics Platform (ELP) this year, around 50 EU policymakers and industry representatives met to discuss with experts the challenges, the potential and use-cases of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). With the upcoming Refuel EU Aviation initiative expected to be published mid-July as part of the ‘Fit for 55’ package, policy makers and industry representatives debated how the EU can create incentives and set the right regulatory framework to increase the uptake of SAF that will help to reduce aviation’s footprint.

RESOLUTION OF CROSS-BORDER TAX DISPUTES FOR SMEs
The European Commission has launched a public consultation on a possible EU cooperative compliance programme, which will allow the tax administrations of EU Member States to resolve together, in a preventive manner, cross-border tax issues faced by small and medium enterprises operating within the EU.

NEW INSTRUMENT FOR MODERN AND RELIABLE CUSTOMS CONTROL EQUIPMENT
On 24 June, the EU Council and the European Parliament signed the regulation establishing the instrument for financial support of about €1 billion for customs control equipment. The new instrument aims to ensure that customs authorities at the EU’s external borders are properly equipped so that the EU Customs Union can function smoothly.

EU PROPOSAL FOR WCO MODERNISATION
On 24 June, at the World Customs Organization’s (WCO) Council session, the EU presented for the first time its initiative for broad reform of the organization. The initiative aims to help strengthen the WCO's position as a key multilateral institution and help it to address developments in today's trade environment more effectively.
