MANDATORY POSTCODE INCLUSION IN EORI RECORDS

On December 4-5, CLECAT participated in the 41st joint meeting of the European Commission’s Customs Expert Group with the Data Integration and Harmonisation section and the TCG. At the meeting, the Commission highlighted to Trade a significant change affecting all EORI-registered Economic Operators from 1st February 2024. From this date, initiating a transit or AES-based export procedures will be unfeasible with an EORI registration that omits a valid postcode. This issue is particularly pronounced in countries where a substantial number of Economic Operators from other nations are registered (e.g., the Netherlands, Sweden), or in countries with a unique national postcode system (such as Ireland).

The Commission is now advising trade to promptly verify the accuracy and completeness of their EORI records, to update their registration to include a valid postcode where necessary and to ensure that all new registrations are complete. It is also crucial to note that EORI records can only be updated in the Member State of Establishment. This means that from next February, if your movement is impeded at the border due to an absent postcode, your shipment will be detained until the missing information is updated by the National Authority of the Member State where your company is registered.
