According Drewry’s Container Market Outlook webinar this week, global container shipping profitability is expected to fall sharply, with the sector barely remaining above break-even in 2026. Drewry experts estimate that the combined profit of all container carriers worldwide will amount to around USD 1 billion this year, a dramatic decline compared to previous years.

ELECTRIC TRUCKS SET TO REACH 5% MARKET SHARE IN EUROPE BY 2026
Sales of electric trucks in Europe are expected to continue their upward trend in 2026. According to new analysis by ING Research, the market share of heavy-duty electric trucks (over 16 tonnes) is forecast to exceed 5% in 2026, up from around 3% last year.

PARLIAMENT REFERS EU-MERCOSUR AGREEMENT TO EUROPEAN COURT
The European Parliament held a vote on 21 January on the next procedural steps concerning the EU-Mercosur agreement, deciding to request a legal opinion from the European Court of Justice on the conformity of the agreement with the EU Treaties. The resolution was adopted by a narrow margin, reflecting the highly divided views within Parliament on the agreement.

CONTAINER SHIPPING WEIGHS A RETURN TO THE SUEZ CANAL
Early 2026 has brought cautious signals of movement on the Suez Canal route, but no broad return of container shipping. While Maersk has confirmed this week limited test sailings, other major carriers, including Hapag-Lloyd and Ocean Network Express (ONE), have made clear that they are not yet resuming regular transits.

ESPORG has launched a new Voluntary Green Truck Parking Standard, together with a voluntary certification scheme to audit and certify safe and secure truck parking areas across Europe. EU–MERCOSUR: COUNCIL CLEARS THE WAY FOR SIGNATURE
On 9 January 2026, the Council of the European Union adopted the decisions authorising the signature of the EU–Mercosur Partnership Agreement (EMPA) and the Interim Trade Agreement (iTA). This marks a major milestone in the EU’s long-standing relationship with Mercosur partners – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay – and brings to a close negotiations that began back in 1999.
