SWITZERLAND JOINS REFUELEU AVIATION
As of 1 January 2026, Switzerland has formally aligned with the EU’s ReFuelEU Aviation framework, marking an important step towards a more integrated European market for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The move extends the core elements of the EU regime to Swiss airports and operators, reinforcing regulatory convergence in European aviation decarbonisation policy.
The development follows confirmation by the European Commission that Switzerland will apply the same SAF blending mandates and operational requirements as EU Member States. In practical terms, aviation fuel suppliers at Zurich Airport and Geneva Airport will be required to ensure that at least 2% of aviation fuel supplied consists of sustainable aviation fuel from 2026 onward. This minimum share will gradually increase in line with the EU trajectory, reaching 70% by 2050.
Swiss authorities, including the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation, have published guidance to support implementation and ensure operational readiness at the main international airports.
