NEW REPORT ON PRIORITY LOCATIONS FOR PUBLIC CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE
The Smart Freight Centre (SFC) has published a new report titled “Accelerating Public Charging (APC): Determining Near-Term Medium and Heavy-Duty Public Truck Charging Locations,” presenting a data-driven approach to the planning of public charging infrastructure for battery-electric trucks (BETs). The report identifies strategic locations in Germany and Poland, where public charging investments could deliver the greatest impact in supporting freight decarbonisation.
Compared to other studies based on traditional modelling on projections or hypothetical scenarios, the report relies on actual freight movement data from first-mover logistics companies. This demand-based methodology, developed using Amazon’s CHALET tool in collaboration with SFC members and partners, aims to ensure infrastructure is deployed where it is most needed and most likely to be used.
The study highlights infrastructure gaps and high-potential corridors in both countries. In Germany, widespread charging needs are identified, particularly across central and western corridors, calling for investment beyond the TEN-T network. In Poland, a major freight hub in Eastern Europe, opportunities are reinforced by recent subsidy schemes and the launch of SFC’s Poland Corridor Project. This new multi-stakeholder initiative will support the deployment of high-priority public charging sites by engaging fleet operators and shippers, identifying funding opportunities, and exploring public-private investment models.
To support further infrastructure planning, SFC has also launched a stakeholder survey to identify the next priority corridor for BET deployment.
