EU COMMISSION SETS NEW PROTECTIVE DUTY RATES FOR SHIPBUILDING COMPONENTS

In order to protect local industry, on the 11th January the European Commission announced the imposition of duties on bulb flats, a specialized steel product integral to shipbuilding, imported from Turkey and China. This action comes as a relief to the EU's two main producers of these products, both small and medium-sized enterprises in Spain and Italy.  An anti-dumping investigation revealed that the EU industry was suffering significant harm due to these dumped imports, creating an uneven playing field.

To level the competition and ensure the viability of EU producers, the Commission has set duties at 23% for Chinese imports and 13.6% for those from Turkey. Bulb flats, primarily used to reinforce ship hulls, are crucial in the construction of both passenger cruise ships and military vessels. This measure by the EU Commission reflects its commitment to fair trade and the protection of its local industries from unfair external competition.
