COMMISSION YET TO DECIDE ON EUROPEAN ROAD TRANSPORT AGENCY

The European Commission has not yet taken a final position on the possible creation of a European Road Transport Agency. This was confirmed by Transport Commissioner Apóstolos Tzitzikóstas in a written reply to a parliamentary question submitted by MEP Elena Kountoura (The Left). In response to the MEP’s question, Commissioner Tzitzikostas explained that the Commission has completed a feasibility study examining “different scenarios in terms of governance structure.” However, the assessment of concrete needs is still ongoing. The Commission will decide on any further measures only once this evaluation has been finalised.

MEP Kountoura had asked whether the Commission intends to establish a European Road Transport Agency, modelled on existing EU agencies in other transport modes, as part of the Union’s ambition to achieve zero road fatalities by 2050. Dedicated EU agencies already operate in other sectors, including the European Union Agency for Railways, the European Maritime Safety Agency and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, which play a central role in safety oversight, regulatory harmonisation and technical coordination.

The discussion has also surfaced at Council level. When outlining the priorities of the Cypriot Council Presidency on 27 January, Cyprus’ Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeades, indicated that Nicosia intends to support the idea of a road safety agency, describing it as a forum where issues could be further discussed and developed. For the time being, the Commission’s position remains open, pending the outcome of its ongoing needs assessment.
