SMART FREIGHT WEEK 2023

CLECAT participated this week at the three-day conference organised by Smart Freight Centre which welcomed more than 300 participants. The event was organised to help unite the freight community in its journey towards decarbonizing.

EP PLENARY ADOPTS KEY FIT FOR 55 FILES

On 18 April, the European Parliament in plenary approved several key pieces of legislation that are part of the "Fit for 55" package, which aims to reduce the EU’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. This includes reforms to the Emissions Trading System (ETS), a new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and an EU Social Climate Fund (SCF) to combat energy poverty.

ELP EVENT ON ZERO-EMISSION FREIGHT TRANSPORT ALONG THE TEN-T NETWORK

On 3 May the European Logistics Platform (ELP) organises a lunch event to discuss the challenges of securing renewable energy supplies and grid capacity along the TEN-T network. The event will be hosted by MEP Henna Virkkunen (EPP, Finland), member of the TRAN and ITRE Committee.

CONTAINER SHIPPING RATE BAROMETER IN GREEN FOR FIRST TIME IN MONTHS

Drewry reported this week that the composite World Container Index increased by 4% to $1,773.58 per 40ft container this week, the first increase in 15 weeks. In comparison, it has has dropped by 77% when compared with the same week last year.

WORLD BANK RELEASES LOGISTICS PERFORMANCE INDEX 2023

The World Bank today released its 2023 Logistics Performance Index report, a measure of countries’ ability to move goods across borders with speed and reliability. The seventh edition of Connecting to Compete, the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) report comes after three years of unprecedented supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, when delivery times soared.

MEMBERS STATES APPROVE INTRODUCTION OF TRANSITIONAL SMART TACHOGRAPH

On 17 April, the European Commission’s Road Transport Committee, composed of Member States’ representatives advising the Commission on implementing acts, approved the draft implementing act on the technical specifications for the transitional smart tachograph version 2, which will be introduced as planned on 21 August 2023.

On 25 April, the third interinstitutional negotiation meeting between Council and Parliament will take place on RefuelEU Aviation.

GSF AND FIATA PUBLISH DATA SECURITY AND CONFIDENTIALITY CHARTER

On 19 April, FIATA and the Global Shippers’ Forum published a Charter for Protection and Governance of Data in International Trade to improve standards of data protection and confidentiality in digital trading and booking systems.
