AIR CARGO CONTINUES TO GROW IN SEPTEMBER
On 29 October, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its air cargo market data for September, showing continued resilience and steady growth in the sector.
Compared to September 2024, total demand – measured in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs) – increased by 2.9% (3.2% for international operations), while capacity – measured in available cargo tonne-kilometres (ACTKs) – rose by 3% (4.4% for international operations).
European carriers recorded a 2.5% year-on-year increase in demand and a 4.4% rise in capacity. Demand on Europe–Asia routes grew by 12.4% year-on-year, marking the 31st consecutive month of expansion, while North America–Europe routes saw a 2.6% increase. In contrast, intra-EU demand declined slightly by 1.1%, marking the second consecutive month of contraction.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh indicated that air cargo continues to adapt successfully to shifting trade dynamics. He noted that growth within Asia and on routes connecting Asia to Europe, Africa and the Middle East continue to offset declines in North America–Asia demand, highlighting the sector’s resilience amid changing market conditions.
