ITF STUDY ON CURBING THE IMPACT OF FREIGHT DELIVERIES IN CITIES

The International Transport Forum has published a study on actions to make deliveries in cities less disruptive and more sustainable. The report focuses on the street space use of freight activities, as how goods are distributed in urban environments profoundly affect metropolitan life. It further indicates that new partnerships, innovative methods, the use of data and intelligent space allocation as ways to ease the pressure on cities and their inhabitants.

The report also examines 21 measures to explore how private and public actors can address urban freight’s need for space, which include managing the times and spaces where freight activities occur, the types of vehicles used or characteristics of the associated freight flows. The analysis is based on computer simulations of how the measures would impact space-use, road safety and the environment in a medium-sized European city.

Furthermore, the report makes recommendations to authorities on how to manage curb space with a focus on the needs of both passengers and goods transport, the need to declare parts of cities off limits for certain types of vehicles and the need to use more logistics data to better monitor and manage freight flows.

The ITF will organise a 30-minute online presentation and Q&A, with the author Joshua Paternina Blanco on the 14th December to which registration is open.
