EU TRANSPORT MINISTERS DISCUSS ROLE OF RAIL AND PORTS IN STRENGTHENING RESILIENCE
On 29 April, EU Transport Ministers met in Cyprus for an informal Council meeting to discuss how to strengthen the resilience, competitiveness and strategic autonomy of the EU transport system in light of ongoing geopolitical and economic challenges.
Discussions took place against the backdrop of recent geopolitical developments and rising energy costs, which continue to affect transport operations across the EU. Ministers also recalled their recent exchanges on fuel supply, underlining the importance of close coordination at EU level to safeguard connectivity and ensure the proper functioning of the internal market.
A key focus of the discussions was the role of transport infrastructure in enhancing resilience. In this context, ministers examined ways to accelerate the deployment of interoperable railway technologies, including the rollout of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The meeting also addressed the strategic role of EU ports. Ministers emphasised their importance for trade, energy supply chains and security, and stressed the need to strengthen their resilience, address emerging risks and improve connections with inland transport networks.
