EP ADOPTS REVISED CO2 STANDARDS FOR CARS AND VANS

The European Parliament adopted in Plenary session on 8 June its position on the revision of the Regulation on CO2 standards for new light duty vehicles. MEPs largely support the ENVI report adopted on 11 May, endorsing the Commission proposal to reach 100% new sales of zero-emission cars and vans by 2035.

MEPs expressed their support for an intermediate emission reduction target set at 50% for vans by 2030, compared to 2021 levels. MEPs want to the incentive mechanism for zero- and low-emission vehicles (‘ZLEV’), as it no longer serves its original purpose, and call on the Commission to introduce a common EU methodology for assessing the full life cycle of CO2 emissions of cars and vans placed on the EU market, as well as for the fuels and energy consumed by these vehicles.

CLECAT, as a member of the European Clean Trucking Alliance (ECTA) welcomes the Parliament’s commitment to reach 100% zero-emission light-duty vehicles sales in 2035 but considers that the 50% CO2 reduction target for 2030 falls short of what is needed to deliver the necessary volume of electric vans needed for zero-emissions city logistics in the 2020s.

The Parliament is now ready to start negotiations with the Council, which is expected to adopt its position on 28 June.
