EU KEEPS LEADERSHIP IN AGRI-FOOD TRADE
On 8 September, the European Commission published the 2020 annual report on EU agri-food trade, which finds that the EU reinforced its leading position among the world’s biggest exporters. On the import side, the EU has become the third largest importer after the US and China.

UK EXTENDS GRACE PERIODS FOR TRADE INTO NI
On 6 September, the UK Government announced that the grace periods covering post-Brexit trade from Great Britain to Northern Ireland will be extended again from October 1 "to provide space for potential further discussions" on the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

ENISA PUBLISHES SECURE SME TOOL
On 8 September, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) announced the creation of the “SecureSME Tool”, a practical and user-friendly tool facilitating SMEs to navigate to ENISA’s tips, guidelines and recommendations. The tool was presented within the framework of the International Cybersecurity Forum (FIC 2021) in Lille, France.

SHIPPING INDUSTRY PROPOSES GLOBAL LEVY ON CO2
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and Intercargo submitted a proposal to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to implement a global levy on carbon emissions from ships to help the shipping industry to reduce emissions. The proposal is a response to the proposal of the European Commission to extend the EU ETS to maritime transport.

ENVI COMMITTEE DISCUSSES ETS REVISION
On 9 September, MEPs from the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) Committee held an exchange of views with DG CLIMA Director Beatriz Yordi on the revision of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The European Commission’s Fit for 55 package proposes to extend the current EU ETS to maritime transport, gradually remove free allowances for the aviation sector and create a new separate ETS system for road transport and heating sectors.

GLOBAL MARITIME REGULATORY SUMMIT
On 7 September, senior government officials from the EU, the US and China participated in the Fifth Global Maritime Regulatory Summit. Participants included representatives from DG COMP for the EU, the Federal Maritime Commission for the United States and the Ministry of Transportation for China.
