CLECAT Launches ISO 14083 Guide for Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Freight Transport
CLECAT, the European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics, and Customs Services, has published today a comprehensive guide on the application of ISO 14083, the international standard for quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in transport services. This new resource empowers freight forwarding companies to calculate and report emissions from their transport activities, contributing to greater transparency and sustainability across global supply chains.
The guide is the English translation of the publication by the German Federal Environment Agency. It has been reviewed and updated by CLECAT to ensure its relevance and applicability for the broader European logistics sector. It includes practical case examples and a detailed list of key emission factors, making it an essential reference for freight forwarders responding to increasingly complex environmental reporting requirements.
The publication is particularly timely as it helps freight forwarders address various reporting requirements, including those under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). By adhering to the standardised methodology outlined in ISO 14083, companies can enhance their environmental accountability and respond to the growing demand for reliable transport emissions data from regulators, customers, and supply chain partners.
Nicolette van der Jagt, CLECAT’s Director General, commented: "The logistics industry plays a critical role in the transition to a low-carbon economy. With this updated guide to ISO 14083, CLECAT provides freight forwarders with a practical tool to measure and report emissions while fostering greater collaboration across the supply chain. As the European Parliament and Council continue discussions on the CountEmissions EU initiative in support of the application of ISO 14083 in the transport sector, this guide reflects our commitment to bringing essential resources to the European logistics community. "
Catherine Löfquist, Chair of the CLECAT Sustainable Logistics Institute, added: "Standardisation in GHG emissions reporting is vital for accountability and action in the freight transport sector. By adopting ISO 14083, freight forwarders can identify emission hotspots, take targeted actions to reduce their environmental impact and better align with customer expectations. CLECAT’s guide not only supports compliance with emerging requirements, such as reporting Scope 3 emissions as set out in the CSRD, but also helps position the sector for a sustainable future."
The guide is available to CLECAT members, their member companies and the wider transport & logistics community, with the aim of encouraging widespread adoption of ISO 14083 within the sector.
