TRAN COMMITTEE ENDORSES ROAD FREIGHT AGREEMENTS WITH UKRAINE AND MOLDOVA

Earlier this week, the EP’s Transport and Tourism (TRAN) Committee unanimously approved two separate agreements with Ukraine and Moldova to temporarily facilitate road freight transport between the EU and the two countries. The road transport agreements would replace existing bilateral transport agreements and ease cross-border transport of goods.

The two deals which have been signed by Member States at the end of June 2022 are part of the EU’s response to the disruptions in the transport sector in Ukraine and Moldova caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The road transport agreements will allow Ukrainian, Moldovan and EU hauliers to transit through and operate between each other's territories, without the need for permits for these operations. The agreement between the EU and Ukraine also provides for the recognition of Ukrainian driving licences and certificates of professional competence. The agreements will apply until 30 June 2023, with the possibility to renew them at the latest three months before their expiry.

Both agreements are provisionally in force since 29 June 2022. The European Parliament as a whole is expected to vote at the next Plenary session in November to formally approve the agreements.
