TRAN COMMITTEE APPROVES POSITION ON ROADWORTHINESS PACKAGE AHEAD OF TRILOGUE NEGOTIATIONS

The European Parliament’ Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) has adopted its position on the revision of the EU Roadworthiness Package. The adopted report confirms several important changes compared to the original European Commission proposal. Particularly, MEPs supported compromise amendments tabled by S&D, Renew, Greens, and The Left encouraging Member States to develop systems for monitoring pollutant emissions using remote sensing technologies. However, unlike the Commission proposal, the use of such technologies would not become mandatory at EU level.

The TRAN Committee also confirmed its opposition to the introduction of mandatory annual inspections for vehicles older than ten years. With Parliament’s position on the registration documents file adopted in April, trilogue negotiations on the full Roadworthiness Package are expected to begin in the coming weeks.

CLECAT welcomes the balanced approach taken by the TRAN Committee, particularly the decision not to impose mandatory annual inspections for older vehicles and the more flexible approach regarding remote sensing technologies. The upcoming trilogue discussions with Council and Commission will now determine the final shape of the revised EU roadworthiness framework.
