POLISH HAULIERS SUSPEND BLOCKADE ON UKRAINE BORDER

This week, the Polish government announced that it found an agreement with the Polish truckers to lift the blockade of the border with Ukraine, at least until 1st March.

The Polish hauliers have been blocking the border since November to demand the reintroduction of restrictions to enter the European Union for their Ukrainian competitors. As a result, thousands of trucks and drivers were left stranded in difficult winter conditions. At the last Transport Council in December. The Commission called on Poland and other EU neighbours to Ukraine to take necessary measures to ensure the borders remain open and respect the EU solidarity Lanes concept as well as the EU/Ukraine agreement facilitating road freight transport between them.

The main points of the agreement between Polish hauliers and their government include the monitoring of solutions worked out jointly by Poland and Ukraine to ease the situation of EU-registered drivers in Ukraine, talks with the EU regarding its agreement with Ukraine and talks with the European Commission on financial support for Polish haulage companies. The deal also provides for more road checks to stop Ukrainian truckers from carrying out services not provided for under the EU-Ukraine agreement.
