MORE MEMBER STATES EXPECTED TO JOIN E-SAF EARLY MOVERS ALLIANCE
On 5 May, during a meeting of the European Parliament’s Transport Committee, Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas announced that additional Member States are expected to join the EU’s “Early Movers Alliance” on synthetic sustainable aviation fuels (e-SAF).
According to the Commissioner, several Member States expressed interest in joining the initiative during the informal meeting of EU Transport Ministers held in Cyprus on 29 April. Discussions are currently ongoing regarding their participation, although no further details on the countries involved have been disclosed at this stage.
The alliance was initially announced as part of the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan presented in November 2025 and formally launched in December 2025. It currently includes France, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Finland, Spain and the Netherlands. The initiative aims to support the development and market uptake of e-SAF through a double-auction mechanism involving a market intermediary, with the objective of facilitating investment and helping bridge the cost gap between synthetic aviation fuels and conventional kerosene.
A pilot project is expected to be launched before the end of the year, although at this stage only Luxembourg and Germany have formally committed financial contributions to the initiative.
