LIFE FIT PROJECT BOOSTS INTERMODAL RAIL AND ATTRACTS €12.5 MILLION INVESTMENT

On 14 April, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) published results of the LIFE Facilitating Intermodal Transport (LIFE FIT) project, which aims to support modal shift from road to rail through digital solutions.

With a total budget of €3.4 million, including €1.87 million in EU co-funding, the project has contributed to improving access to intermodal rail services across Europe. At the centre of the initiative is a digital platform developed by Rail-Flow, enabling companies to identify and book intermodal transport solutions more easily.

The platform currently connects 37 intermodal operators across 32 countries and offers access to more than 9,500 transport lanes, including routes extending beyond the EU. By facilitating access to rail services, the project has supported modal shift and contributed to operational efficiencies, with reported cost reductions of 10–20% on selected routes. The initiative has also delivered environmental benefits, including estimated savings of 115,000 litres of diesel. These results underline the potential of digitalisation to address key barriers to intermodal transport, notably limited visibility and accessibility of rail freight services.

Building on these outcomes, Rail-Flow has secured €12.5 million in private investment to scale up its activities, further develop its platform and expand geographically. The company aims to strengthen the integration of digital tools, including artificial intelligence, to enhance efficiency and support wider uptake of intermodal transport solutions.
