ICCT HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR TARGETED GRID PLANNING FOR ELECTRIC TRUCK CHARGING
The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) has published a new study modelling where and when demand for electric truck charging infrastructure is expected to develop across Europe between 2030 and 2045. Considering different scenarios for the uptake of electric trucks, the study finds substantial differences in charging and electricity demand both within and between European countries.
A key finding is the strong geographical concentration of future charging demand. According to the ICCT, prioritising the 10% of locations with the highest expected demand could cover up to 90% of total electricity demand from electric trucks across Europe. Identifying these locations early could therefore allow grid operators and policymakers to target grid expansion and charging infrastructure investment where it will be needed most.
The study also underlines the central role of depot charging, which accounts for more than 70–80% of total charging energy demand in most scenarios. The findings reinforce the importance of timely and targeted grid development, particularly at logistics facilities and other high-demand locations, to ensure that electricity infrastructure keeps pace with the electrification of European road freight transport.
