EU SUPPORTS MODERNISATION OF ALBANIA RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE

On 8 April, the European Union (EU) announced a €90.5 million financial package to support the upgrade of the Durrës–Rrogozhina railway section in Albania. The initiative is part of the EU’s broader strategy to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable transport in the Western Balkans.

The funds include a €60.5 million EU grant under the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) and a €30 million loan from EIB Global, the EIB Group’s specialised at increasing the impact of international partnerships and development finance. The project aims to modernise a 34 km railway line between the Port of Durrës and Rrogozhina – a strategic segment of Pan-European Corridor VIII. This corridor links southern Italy, Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria, and is part of the extended Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The upgrade is expected to enhance the safety, efficiency and sustainability of freight transport, while contributing to regional integration and economic development.

The project also supports military mobility in Southeast Europe, reinforcing strategic EU and NATO transport corridors.
