EU PROPOSES NEW ARRANGEMENTS FOR IRISH PROTOCOL

Last week, the European Commission proposed new practical arrangements for the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland, that aim to facilitate the movement of goods from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. The measures came in response to the difficulties that people in Northern Ireland have been experiencing because of Brexit.

The package proposes further flexibilities in the area of customs, food, plant and animal health, medicines and engagement with Northern Irish stakeholders. It also proposes a different model for the implementation of the Protocol, in which the flow of goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland - in respect of goods destined to stay in Northern Ireland - is facilitated to a significant extent. These measures come in addition to the package that was presented in June 2021, which aimed to facilitate the movement of live animals from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.

The European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič met with Lord David Frost to discuss the package proposed by the EU and agreed to engage intensively and constructively at both expert and political level to reach common solutions on the implementation of the Protocol.
