EU-FUNDED SCANNER BOOSTS CAPACITY AT POLISH-UKRAINIAN BORDER

On 11 June, the European Commission announced the deployment of a new EU-funded mobile cargo scanner at the Krakovets-Korczowa border crossing point between Poland and Ukraine. Valued at approximately €2.5 million, the scanner was delivered under the EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes initiative, launched in response to Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine to improve cross-border trade routes. The mobile X-ray scanner will improve customs operations by enabling fast, non-intrusive inspections. It is expected to accelerate border checks, increase the accuracy of cargo inspections, and reduce the need for physical examinations, thereby lowering the risk of damage to goods and improving the flow of legitimate trade.

The donation forms part of the EU4IBM-Resilience Project, funded by the EU and implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). In addition to the delivery of the scanner, the project provides specialised training for customs officers. To date, 85 officers have been trained in advanced scanner image analysis, equipping them with practical skills and up-to-date techniques for interpreting inspection data.
