ESAF EARLY MOVERS COALITION TO SCALE UP SYNTHETIC AVIATION FUELS
On 4 December, at the margins of the Transport Council in Brussels, Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain launched the eSAF Early Movers Coalition, bringing together Member States committed to scaling up the production and uptake of synthetic aviation fuels (eSAF).
The initiative, developed under the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan, highlights the strategic role of synthetic aviation fuels in reducing emissions from the aviation sector. Under the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, eSAF must represent 1.2% of fuels supplied at EU airports by 2030, increasing to 35% by 2050. Commissioner for Sustainable Transport Tzitzikostas welcomed the initiative, noting that the Coalition’s ambition to mobilise at least €500 million for large-scale projects will help stimulate investment and accelerate the deployment of eSAF across the EU.
Members of the Coalition intend to provide financial support for the organisation of double-sided auctions for eSAF, with the first auction planned for 2026. These auctions aim to offer long-term revenue certainty for producers while enabling buyers to secure competitive short-term contracts.
