EP PREPARES OWN INITIATIVE REPORT ON SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUELS
MEP Jan-Christoph Oetjen (Renew Europe, DE) was appointed rapporteur for a European Parliament own-initiative report on a regulatory framework to promote the uptake of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
The report will focus in particular on the development of a book-and-claim mechanism for synthetic sustainable aviation fuels (eSAF). Such a mechanism would allow the environmental attributes of eSAF to be traded independently of the physical delivery of the fuel through a certified book-and-claim system, facilitating wider market uptake across the aviation sector.
The initiative builds on previous discussions in the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN), where MEP Oetjen has advocated for the introduction of a book-and-claim framework as a means of supporting the deployment of eSAF.
