EP AND COUNCIL REACH PROVISIONAL AGREEMENT ON INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

On 8 June, the European Parliament and Council reached a provisional agreement on revising the 2010 directive for intelligent transport systems (ITS) deployment. The revised directive aims to align  technological advancements in connected and automated mobility, on-demand mobility applications, and multimodal transport, while facilitating the availability and interoperability of digital data supporting these services.

The agreement emphasises the systematic and harmonised deployment of intelligent transport systems, considering cost-benefit factors and administrative capacity. It maintains the structure of the Commission's proposal, building upon the ITS directive framework and incorporating technical interventions through implementing and delegated acts. On top of that, the directive's annexes outline the necessary data types, including access conditions for tunnels and bridges, speed limits, traffic circulation plans, and road closures, which must be accessible across the EU. To facilitate data sharing, a national database will be established to foster information exchange among Member States, businesses, and consumers regarding road and traffic data.

The informal agreement now needs to be approved by the Parliament's Transport and Tourism Committee and the Council's Committee of Permanent Representatives, as well as the Council and the Parliament as a whole.
