EC PUBLISHES WORK PROGRAMME 2024

This week the European Commission presented its Work Programme for 2024, detailing the proposals and priorities that will unfold before the end of the current mandate. While the Work Programme calls for concluding ongoing legislation before the political recess, it also presents several new initiatives.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has consistently insisted on supporting European industry. The EU is already working on this through initiatives such as the Net-Zero Industry Act. In addition, this year’s Work Programme puts a lot of emphasis on relieving the administrative burden for businesses.  The Commission will present 26 additional proposals aimed at reducing administrative burdens, with the goal of preserving the competitiveness of European businesses. Furthermore, the Commission expressed its commitment to work closely with co-legislators to maintain efficient reporting requirements while ensuring that the legislation's core objectives and purpose are upheld. In line with this commitment, the Commission will extend the deadline for adopting sector-specific European sustainability reporting standards under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) by two years, from June 2024 to June 2026, giving stakeholders more time to adapt.

Also, it has to be noted however that the Commission will initiate the process of establishing EU climate targets for 2040, set to be published in the first quarter of 2024.

The Commission’s ongoing work in the areas of Freight Transport (such as the Greening Freight Package) is mentioned in the annex of the Work Programme.
