EC LAUNCHES THE UNION OF SKILLS

Last week, the European Commission issued a Communication entitled “The Union of Skills”, an initiative addressing labour shortages, enhancing workforce capabilities across various sectors, including transport and aiming to bridge the gap between the needs of employers and the skills of the workforce.

The Union of Skills aims to build a strong educational foundation, promote lifelong learning, and ensure that skills are recognised and transferable across the EU. By investing in education and training programmes, the initiative seeks to attract new talent and upskill existing workers, particularly in the transport sector which faced an ever increaser labour shortage. This includes promoting apprenticeships, on-the-job training, and enhancing vocational education and training (VET) to provide practical experience and encourage more individuals to pursue careers in transport.

A key aspect of the initiative is improving the attractiveness of the transport sector as a career choice. This involves promoting the benefits of a career in transport, such as job security, competitive salaries, and opportunities for advancement. The Union of Skills will also work to enhance working conditions, including health and safety standards, to make the sector more appealing to potential employees. The initiative will also focus on facilitating the recognition of skills and qualifications across EU Member States, and work on initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining third country skilled professionals.

CLECAT welcomes the Union of Skills initiative as a crucial step in addressing the skills shortage in transport and logistics, particularly the shortage of professional drivers. The initiative offers a comprehensive approach to building a skilled and resilient workforce, focusing on education, training, and improving working conditions. This effort is vital in ensuring that the transport sector remains competitive and capable of meeting future challenges. The initiative's success will depend on the collective efforts of all stakeholders to achieve its ambitious goals and position Europe as a leader in sustainable transport solutions.
