EASA REPORT CONFIRMS 2025 SAF TARGET ACHIEVED
On 17 September 2026, a report published by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) confirmed that the 2025 sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) target under the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation has been achieved. SAF accounted for 2.8% of fuel supplied at EU airports, above the 2% minimum target applicable in 2025.
SAF supply increased from 193,000 tonnes in 2024 to 1.1 million tonnes in 2025, the first year in which the ReFuelEU Aviation targets applied. EASA estimates that planned production capacity in the EU should allow the sector to meet the 6% SAF target set for 2030. The Agency also expects the sub-target for synthetic aviation fuels (e-SAF) to be met by 2030, although as of June 2026, no commercial-scale e-SAF facility in the EU had reached a final investment decision.
The report also shows that 86% of SAF supplied at European airports in 2025 was produced in the EU. However, only 15% was produced from feedstocks originating in the EU, with China accounting for 61% of feedstock supply. SAF was supplied at 121 Union airports across all Member States in 2025, meaning that 79% of Union airports received SAF during the year. However, the ten airports receiving the largest amounts accounted for 65% of total SAF supplied in the EU. EASA notes that the distribution of SAF is influenced by factors including the number of fuel suppliers, suppliers’ decisions on where to make SAF available under the ReFuelEU Aviation flexibility mechanism, and other economic and operational considerations.
