DHL EXPANDS CUSTOMS CAPACITY AMID TARIFF COMPLEXITY

DHL Global Forwarding is significantly expanding its customs capacity, with plans to hire more than 200 additional customs agents to manage the rising complexity of U.S. trade tariffs. Tim Robertson, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding, told CNBC on 17 September that shifting tariff and duty rates are changing “on an almost daily basis,” creating major challenges for importers. He underlined that “trusted experts” are needed more than ever to simplify clearance, ensure compliance, and provide real-time visibility of landed costs.

The expansion will boost DHL’s customs capacity by nearly 40%, with a focus on supporting small and medium-sized importers most exposed to tariff changes. Robertson also warned of a shortage of experienced customs professionals, calling for industry-wide solutions. The move highlights how tariff volatility and reshoring policies are reshaping trade flows and placing customs compliance at the centre of supply chain resilience.
