COMMISSION WARNS OF POTENTIAL AVIATION FUEL SUPPLY CONSTRAINTS

On 14 April, the European Commission indicated that while there are currently no signs of fuel shortages in the EU, supply constraints could emerge in the near future, particularly with regard to aviation fuels.

These concerns are echoed by the International Energy Agency. Its Executive Director, Fatih Birol, warned in an interview with Associated Press that Europe may have only around six weeks of kerosene reserves, raising the risk of flight disruptions if oil supplies remain constrained.

In this context, the Commission confirmed that it is in close contact with Member States and industry stakeholders to monitor developments, maintain an overview of the situation, and gather real-time data. It is expected to present a set of measures on 22 April to address the evolving situation, taking a comprehensive approach to managing the potential impacts on energy supply and transport operations.

Preliminary indications suggest that the upcoming measures may focus on maximising the availability and operational capacity of European refineries, as around 40% of aviation fuel consumption in the EU relies on imports.
