COMMISSION PROPOSES A NEW SOLUTION FOR NORTHERN IRELAND BUSINESSES UNDER THE WINDSOR FRAMEWORK

On 30th January the European Commission has adopted a new proposal as part of the Windsor Framework, outlining a new EU-UK joint solution for the utilization of tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) by Northern Ireland businesses. The proposal seeks to amend the 'goods not at risk' section of the Joint Committee decision of the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement, specifically under the Windsor Framework.

The primary objective is to facilitate Northern Ireland businesses in using UK TRQs for importing various agri-food products, including items like New Zealand lamb, balancing the needs of these businesses with the safeguarding of the EU Single Market.

After comprehensive technical discussions with the UK, the Commission is now presenting this proposal to the Council for approval. Upon the Council's endorsement, the EU and UK are anticipated to formally ratify this solution at the upcoming Joint Committee meeting of the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement.
