FIT FOR 55 NEGOTIATIONS CONTINUE AS ENERGY CRISIS GAINS MOMENTUM

As the negotiations on the Fit for 55 files are entering the final stages of the decision-making procedure and the energy crisis is gaining more political momentum, the European Commission last week announced two demand reduction targets for electricity, including a binding reduction goal of 5% at peak consumption times, ahead of a difficult winter caused by dwindling gas supplies from Russia.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESENTS SINGLE MARKET EMERGENCY INSTRUMENT

On 19 September, the European Commission presented the new Single Market Emergency Instrument (SMEI), a crisis governance framework aiming to preserve the free movement of goods, services and persons and the availability of essential goods and services in the event of future emergencies, to the benefit of citizens and businesses across the EU.

AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTIVITY COMMISSION RECOMMENDS REMOVING CARRIERS’ EXEMPTION TO COMPETITION RULES

Earlier this month, the Australian Government’s Productivity Commission released a draft report examining the performance of Australia's maritime logistics system. The Commission investigated the productivity, efficiency and dependability of Australia’s ports and container depts and of the liner shipping services serving the country.

OCEAN CARRIERS ANNOUNCE ADDITIONAL BLANK SAILINGS

This week, shipping analyst Sea-Intelligence reported that container carriers will likely use China’s Golden Week starting on 1st October as an opportunity to pull more capacity from the market, with the number of blank sailings to reach the highest level in years.

AIR TRAFFIC RECOVERY APPROACHING PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS

The latest analysis of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has revealed that air transport seat capacity and passenger totals globally have reached an estimated 80% of pre-pandemic levels, with passenger revenue at around 72% of its 2019 high point.

NEW SYSTEM ASSESSES ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE OF AIR NAVIGATION SERVICES

According to the 2021 report by the independent Performance Review Body (PRB) for the Single European Sky (SES), Air Traffic Management (ATM) in nine EU Member States has improved, in environmental terms, while it has declined or remained stable in 10. For the first time, the report uses a traffic light system to indicate environmental performance.

5 YEARS OF CETA

The 21st of September marked the fifth anniversary of the provisional application of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The agreement has helped boost EU trade with Canada and has provided the EU with a solid, trusted source of supply for key resources such as energy and raw materials.

ITALY REIMBURSES RAIL FREIGHT COMPANIES FOR LOSSES DUE TO COVID-19

Following the approval of recovery funds by the European Commission in June, the Italian government has implemented a scheme on 16 September to compensate rail freight companies for the losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
