CLECAT CALLS FOR STRONGER EU FUNDING IN MFF CONSULTATION
On 6 May, CLECAT submitted its contribution to the public consultation on the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). While transport infrastructure is not the central focus of the review, the consultation offered an important opportunity to call for strong and dedicated EU funding to support future transport and logistics projects.
The submissions highlight the need for a strong and dedicated EU transport fund under the next MFF, following the joint statement of transport stakeholders including CLECAT expressing concerns that the CEF could be at risk of budget cuts in the upcoming EU budget. A robust European transport network is of strategic importance in responding to Europe’s current challenges. With rising geopolitical tensions and ongoing climate change, it must be Europe’s top priority to strengthen and adapt our infrastructure, enabling it to effectively respond to crises and strengthen its resilience. CLECAT supports the shift to an EU budget that is more flexible and agile, yet requires a long term strategic and stable investment planning with centralised coordination at European level if it is to properly function. We therefore urge the Commission to choose for an approach that strengthens Europe, to preserve a strong and centrally coordinated dedicated European transport funding instrument that prioritises investments of high European added value, and to refrain from choosing an approach where individual national priorities may prevail.
CLECAT welcomes the adoption by the European Parliament this week of a resolution on the post-2027 EU budget, expressing a large support for European freight forwarders’ position. MEP call for the scaling up of the CEF given its contribution to the deepening of the single market and reject the Commission’s idea of replicating the Recovery and Resilience Facility’s single national plan model. The Commission is expected to present its proposals for the next MFF on 16 July 2025.
