CALL FOR EVIDENCE ON THE UPCOMING REVIEW OF THE ALTERNATIVE FUELS INFRASTRUCTURE REGULATION

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence on the upcoming review of the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.  Opened on 23 March, the call for evidence aims to assess the “adequacy of infrastructure targets,” with a particular focus on road transport and the deployment of infrastructure for heavy-duty vehicles. The review comes against the backdrop of growing pressure from Member States: in December 2025, ten countries called for greater flexibility in meeting AFIR targets.

At the same time, the Commission is considering measures to accelerate the rollout of a sufficient network of publicly accessible electric charging points and hydrogen refuelling stations across all vehicle segments. Beyond infrastructure deployment, the consultation also highlights persistent challenges related to the “user experience,” including concerns around price transparency and the integration of electric charging into the broader energy system.

The scope of the review extends beyond road transport. The Commission will also examine the pace of deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure in maritime and aviation sectors, including the availability of onshore power supply in ports.

Stakeholders are invited to submit their input by 20 April, with a broader public consultation planned for the second quarter of 2026.
