AIR CARGO SHOWS RESILIENCE AS DEMAND GROWS IN AUGUST
On 30 September, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released air cargo market data for August, showing continued resilience in the sector.
Compared to August 2024, total demand – measured in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs) – grew by 4.1% (5.1% for international operations), while capacity – measured in available cargo tonne-kilometres (ACTKs) – increased by 3.7% (5.5% for international operations). European carriers recorded a 3.2% year-on-year increase in demand and a 4.2% rise in capacity. Europe–Asia demand rose 13.0% year-on-year, marking 30 consecutive months of growth, while North America–Europe increased 7.8% over the same period. Instead, intra-EU demand fell slightly by 0.9%, marking its first decline in a year.
Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, noted that the data indicates air cargo has benefited from a shift away from sea transport for certain high-value goods, as shippers seek to minimise the risk of tariff changes.
