AIR CARGO DEMAND HOLDS STRONG DESPITE CHALLENGES
Compared to June 2024, total demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs), increased by 0.8% (1.6% for international operations). Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometres (ACTKs), increased by 1.7% compared to June 2024 (2.8% for international operations).
European carriers recorded a 0.8% year-on-year growth in cargo demand in June, while capacity increased by 2.6% over the same period. Demand on Europe-Asia routes grew by 10.6%, marking the 28th consecutive month of growth. Traffic on Europe-North America routes increased by 4.8%, continuing a growth trend for the 17th consecutive month.
Mr Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, stressed that stability and predictability are vital to supporting trade. While the emerging clarity on US tariffs gives businesses greater confidence to plan, he argued that recent deals have led to much higher tariffs on imports into the US. He emphasised the need for government to step up efforts to make trade facilitation simpler, faster and more secure through digitalisation.
