On 27 October, the European Parliament’s Transport and Tourism (TRAN) Committee held a public debate on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the global development strategy adopted by the Chinese government, involving infrastructure development and investments. The debate can be webstreamed here.

Representatives of academia and the private sector discussed with TRAN Members the challenges and opportunities of the BRI for the European transport system. During the debate, relevant political and economic consequences of the Belt and Road and the strategic ramifications of China's investments in the transport infrastructures of the EU, were discussed. The research study ‘The New Silk Route – opportunities and challenges for EU transport’, commissioned by the TRAN Committee, also served as background for the discussions.
