SWITZERLAND JOINS REFUELEU AVIATION AS OF 1 JANUARY 2026

Switzerland will officially join ReFuelEU Aviation as of 1 January 2026, marking an important step towards a truly European market for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). By aligning with the EU framework, Switzerland contributes to regulatory consistency across Europe and supports the long-term decarbonisation of the aviation sector.

In practical terms, aviation fuel suppliers at Zurich Airport and Geneva Airport will be required to ensure a minimum 2% SAF blend, with the mandated share increasing progressively to 70% by 2050. Airlines operating from these airports will also be subject to the 90% fuel uplift requirement, which aims to reduce unnecessary emissions by discouraging the carriage of excess fuel weight.

By adopting these rules, Switzerland aligns its approach with that of the European Union, helping to maintain a level playing field for airports and airlines while providing the investment certainty needed to scale up SAF production and accelerate the deployment of clean aviation technologies across Europe.
