SCHIPHOL TESTING GROUND FOR 17 SUSTAINABILITY PROJECTS

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) will become the testing ground for seventeen sustainability projects resulting from TULIPS, a consortium of 29 European parties aimed at speeding up the rollout of sustainable technologies in aviation. The European Commission has awarded a grant of €25 million to the project led by Royal Schiphol Group as part of the 'Green Deal'. The projects will start in January 2022 and last until December 2025.

The parties participating in TULIPS, including airports, airlines, knowledge institutes and sector partners, want to accelerate the rollout of sustainable technology in aviation and contribute to climate-neutral and waste-free airports by 2030 and climate-neutral aviation by 2050. At Schiphol, all new sustainability projects will be demonstrated, while partner airports Oslo (OSL), Turin (TRN) and Larnaca (LCA) will also implement some of these innovations in different scenarios. The knowledge gained will be shared publicly with the aviation sector and other European airports. The projects include:

  • making vehicles on the apron more sustainable
  • testing the facilities for charging aircraft with electric or hydrogen
  • introducing and optimising the large-scale supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)
  • improving circular material use
  • conducting demonstrations to capture ultrafine dust from departing and taking off flights
  • investigating the full journey of passengers and cargo and proposing solutions for an optimal mix of different forms of transport
