PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON COUNT EMISSIONS EU

On 29 July, the European Commission launched an open public consultation on CountEmissions EU, a new initiative that shall make it easier to measure the environmental performance of different transport options. To that end, CountEmissions EU shall offer a framework for calculating transport and logistics-related door-to door greenhouse gas emissions in a consistent way, regardless of transport mode, sector or country of operation.

As announced in the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, this initiative shall help incentivise transport operators to measure emissions and benchmark their services using a common methodology, enabling shippers, passengers, e-commerce customers and public authorities to make informed choices on the most sustainable travel, delivery or service options. The consultation is open until 17 October, and all stakeholders are invited to contribute.

CLECAT supports the objectives as outlined in the EC’s roadmap on CountEmissionsEU, in particular the establishment of a level playing field for GHG emissions accounting in the transport and logistics sectors to facilitate behaviour change. CLECAT would also support the development of a single EU framework for monitoring and calculating GHG emissions data of transport operations/services in freight and passenger sectors based on a global reference methodology.
