PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON AIR SERVICES REGULATION

On 7 March, the European Commission opened a public consultation on the Revision of the Air Services Regulation, which will remain open until 26 May. The Air Services Regulation sets common rules for air services in the EU, including on operating licence requirements, the freedom to provide services and when it can exceptionally be restricted, as well as how prices should be displayed to consumers.

The aim of the revision is to shape a more resilient and sustainable air services sector, including in response to the COVID-19 crisis, while continuing to ensure connectivity and competition, protect consumer interests, and preserve high quality employment.

An evaluation published prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 concluded that these rules need some adjustment. The air services sector now faces  new challenges, such as decarbonisation and becoming digitally smarter, more resilient and socially responsible – the objectives set out in the European Green Deal and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy.
