ITF PUBLISHES REPORT ON GHG ACCOUNTING AND REPORTING IN TRANSPORT

The International Transport Forum (ITF) published this week a report evaluating the current state of GHG accounting and reporting practices in the transport sector providing recommendations to overcome the key challenges to improve transparency and consistency of GHG reporting exercises.

The report acknowledges that the freight sector has made significant progress due to the commitment of numerous actors – including companies, industry associations, governments, standard-setting bodies and NGOs – who have collaborated to develop and implement common, global methodologies, standards and frameworks and continue to do so for further refinement. This has been translated in several global initiatives, including the ISO 14083 standard. However, more can be done to link the different initiatives on methodologies, standards, reporting and regulations strengthen the impact and efficiency of these efforts and avoid ever-increasing economic costs.

The authors of the report recommend further accelerating alignment of different standards and methodologies to ISO 14083 which has emerged as the leading transport service-specific standard for effective data collection, calculation and reporting of GHG emissions in a global transport supply chain. As advocated by CLECAT, the report states that any new national regulations, standards and industry practices must build on ISO 14083 to ensure global alignment for international transport services. Collaboration between standard-setting bodies and reporting frameworks is deemed essential to ensure for strengthening global efforts to tackle emissions reduction. This can be translated by a harmonised framework and validation process for emission factors, as well as data quality and sharing standards to support an efficient GHG emission accounting and reporting process while securing data confidentiality. Finally, the report calls on all stakeholders involved in the logistics supply chain to increase training and raise awareness to maximise the uptake and impact of already-existing best practices.

An interactive webinar will be organised by the ITF on 17 December from 14:40 to 15:30 CET to present the report’s recommendations and answer questions. Registration is possible via this link.
