ICCT REPORT ON 2024 EUROPEAN HDV MARKET
The latest ICCT report on the European heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) market highlights some progress in the adoption of zero-emission technologies throughout 2024. Over 14,000 zero-emission HDVs were sold last year, up from 11,000 in 2023, reflecting a growing commitment to sustainability within the industry.
Heavy trucks (above 12 tonnes), which account for 77% of all HDV sales, saw a modest increase in ZEV sales, reaching a 1.2% market share in 2024, up from 0.9% in 2023. Germany led this segment with 1,200 zero-emission heavy trucks sold, reflecting a 1.7% market share at national level. Just five countries (Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark) were responsible for 90% of all zero-emission heavy trucks sales. However, in countries like Spain and Italy, which together account for nearly 20% of the conventional truck market, zero-emission truck sales remained low, confirming regional disparities in adoption rates.
The light and medium truck segment experienced more substantial growth, with ZEV accounting for 10% of sales in 2024, up from 6% in 2023. Germany was again a leader in this category, with 2,700 zero-emission light and medium trucks sold, representing a 16% market share. Notably, Denmark and Sweden also showed strong adoption rates, with zero-emission vehicles making up 48% and 42% of their respective light and medium truck sales in the fourth quarter of 2024.
These national differences underscore the varied pace of decarbonisation efforts across Europe. While countries like Germany, Denmark, and Sweden are at the forefront of adopting zero-emission technologies, others are progressing more slowly. This disparity highlights the need for targeted policies and investments in charging/refuelling infrastructure, as well as funding and financing opportunities to ensure a more uniform transition towards sustainable transport solutions across the continent.
