IATA PUBLISHES METHODOLOGY FOR SAF EMISSIONS ACCOUNTING
Last week, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its methodology for accounting and reporting emissions reductions from Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This new framework is designed to ensure that SAF’s contribution to the aviation sector’s decarbonisation is accurately and transparently recorded, helping the industry work towards its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Scheduled for launch in April 2025, the new SAF registry will provide a standardised approach for accounting emissions reductions, aiming to support the development of a global SAF market. Airlines will be able to claim SAF benefits for both regulatory and voluntary obligations, regardless of where the fuel is uplifted.
This methodology aligns with ICAO’s CORSIA framework and allows for emissions reductions to be calculated based on SAF purchases. Airlines can choose between tank-to-wake (TTW) and or well-to-wake (WTW) emissions factors, depending on their specific regulatory or voluntary needs. The methodology provides a uniform accounting approach while preventing double-counting, maintaining the integrity of environmental claims, and ensuring consistency with international frameworks.
