GERMANY RATIFIES E-CMR PROTOCOL

On 17 September, the German Bundesrat (Federal Council) ratified the e-CMR protocol, thereby enabling its application in Germany. The e-CMR Protocol of 20 February 2008 supplements the 1956 Convention on the International Carriage of Goods by Road (CMR) and allows the consignment note to be created electronically with legal effect.

To facilitate the introduction of the e-CMR in Germany, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) is developing an open-source application together with Fraunhofer IML Dortmund as part of the Silicon Economy project, which focuses on the fully digitalised logistics chain. It allows SMEs to develop their own business models based on a uniform standard to ensure interoperability.
