EU INVESTS €422 MILLION IN ALTERNATIVE FUELS INFRASTRUCTURE

On 6 February, the European Commission announced the selection of 39 projects across the EU, to support alternative fuels infrastructure. These projects, worth a total of €422 million, were selected under the first cut-off of the 2024-2025 Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) within the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the EU’s funding programme for transport infrastructure.

The selected projects will focus on deploying public electric recharging stations, including high-power megawatt chargers for heavy- and light-duty vehicles, developing hydrogen refuelling stations, and providing onshore power in ports. Additional investments will support airport electrification and infrastructure for alternative fuels such as ammonia and methanol for bunkering facilities.

AFIF aims to expand alternative fuel infrastructure along the trans-European transport network (TEN-T) and aligns with the ReFuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime regulations. The current call, launched on 29 February 2024, has completed its first evaluation round. The next cut-off date is 11 June 2025, with approximately €578 million still available.

Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasised that the projects will significantly expand recharging and refuelling infrastructure, adding nearly 5,000 new charging points, including 626 mega-watt chargers.
