EP SUBMITS QUESTION TO EC ON SCOPE OF ETS MARITIME
On 13 May, MEP Asger Christensen (Renew Europe, Denmark) submitted a priority written question to the European Commission concerning the scope of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) for maritime transport.
The question highlighted the current limitation of the ETS, which only applies to ships above 5,000 gross tonnage. MEP Christensen expressed concern over potential distortions of competition resulting from the exclusion of ships between 400 and 5,000 gross tonnage from the Directive. He asked the Commission whether it intends to include these smaller vessels in the ETS maritime scheme as of 1 January 2027.
In addition, MEP Christensen inquired whether the Innovation Fund could be extended to support the retrofitting of vessels with low energy efficiency and high greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
