EP REJECTS NEGOTATION MANDATE ON OMNIBUS I
The European Parliament is set to vote in November on the revised Omnibus I proposal, which aims to simplify sustainability reporting and due diligence requirements for companies. This follows the rejection in a Plenary vote of the negotiating mandate adopted by the JURI committee last week, pushing back the much-needed simplification measures that could help companies focus on growth and compliance rather than bureaucratic hurdles.
CLECAT has repeatedly called for proportionate, risk-based regulations that avoid overloading businesses with excessive compliance costs. The JURI committee’s recent report, narrows the scope of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) to focus on the largest companies, with simplified requirements for listed SMEs. However, the ongoing postponement of these reforms is disappointing. The delay means that businesses, including freight forwarders, will continue to face uncertainty and unnecessary administrative burdens, hindering their ability to invest in meaningful sustainability efforts and operational efficiency.
While CLECAT welcomes the Committee’s pragmatic approach to reducing regulatory complexity, the prolonged timeline for implementation remains a concern. The freight forwarding sector, already grappling with global supply chain challenges, needs clear and timely regulatory frameworks to thrive. As the Parliament prepares to vote, CLECAT calls on MEPs to ensure a swift adoption and effective enforcement of these simplified rules, ensuring that businesses can focus on innovation and decarbonisation rather than navigating red tape.
