EC OPENS CALL FOR EVIDENCE ON THE REVISION OF THE AIR SERVICES REGULATION

On 8 November, the European Commission published a call for evidence for an impact assessment concerning the EU Air Services Regulation, which sets common rules for air services in the EU, including on operating licence requirements, the freedom to provide services and when it can exceptionally be restricted, as well as how prices should be displayed to consumers.

The aim of the initiative is to shape a more resilient and more sustainable air services sector, including in response to the COVID-19 crisis, while continuing to ensure connectivity and competition, protect consumer interests, and preserve high-quality employment. To that end, the review will take into account the Fit for 55 package, which contains several proposals aimed at decarbonising aviation by 2050 and supporting EU airlines’ green transition.

The call for evidence will remain open until 6 December 2021, with the public consultation for the review of the Regulation being expected for the first quarter of 2022. CLECAT is reviewing the Air Services Regulation, including the policy options under consideration and their likely impacts, in view of providing input to the creation of the new impact assessment which the Commission will prepare to support the initiative.
